New Year Resolution

I normally don't subscribe to the whole New Year Resolution thing because, well, they never work. It gets you going for a little while and then it peters out. Besides, if you are doing it just because it's a new year, that's really not motivation enough to do it.

So, why am I writing about it? Well, it just so happens I have made some resolutions and it happens to be the New Year. These resolutions have been made because it needs to be done. It is also coincidental that it is right after the holidays where I did an EXCESSIVE amount of eating. I didn't necessarily eat badly, just excessively (notice the bolded word in the previous sentence?).

As you can guess, my because-it-needs-doing resolution is to lose weight. Not just lose weight but to get back into shape.

I have never been an runner or other type of fitness fanatic. My dad has been. My brother is becoming one. Me, my mom, and my sister...not so much. This has carried over into my own family. My son and daughter would much rather watch a movie than go outside and play. When I had knee surgery on Dec 23, 2008, things didn't get much better. I felt great and did start running again. BUT, I pushed too hard and ended up hurting my new knee. So, here I am over a year later and worse for wear.

So what are my goals? Well, let's look at where I am right now.

Height: 6'8"
Weight: 280 lbs (yes 280!!!)
1.5 Mile Run Time: ?? (easily over 15:00)
Waist: 38" (yikes)
Body Fat %: 28% (again, yikes)

So what are my goals?

Height: 6'10" (never gonna happen, but would be nice)
Weight: 230-235 lbs
1.5 Mile Run Time: 12:00
Waist: 34-35"
Body Fat %: 15-18%

How am I going to accomplish this? Well, duh. Diet and exercise. I went snooping around the web and found some resources that I like. I am tired of the ridiculous Tony Horton's and Tony Little's saying, "It's so easy. All you do is spend $300 and get my new whatchamajig. Oh and buy these supplements that I endorse and follow my plan exactly. Oh and did I tell you that you have to be in pretty good shape to begin with. And the pounds will melt right off. It's that easy!" Thanks.

So what am I really doing? I went online and found something that was done by a normal guy. He's not ridiculously ripped and actually does this for a living. He didn't talk about this quick loss scheme with ridiculous rules (only grapefruit...seriously? Who does that?). It's an actual lifestyle change that is doable and will keep it off.

Now, you are like, "Did someone hack your blog and post this commercial in here?" No, I'm not even going to tell you who it is and where I got it. It doesn't matter because I will give you the readers digest version here as we go.

I will post a picture of my before-ness, but most of you have seen me either in person or in pictures. So expect that later.

So enough with the "gonna"s and let do. Well, I have been doing this for almost a week and have lost 4 pounds. Woo-hoo.

Let me break it down. The biggest thing is........DIET. That's right, not exercise. Wait, what? Yes, diet. Anyway, I eat 5-6 meals a day. Yes, A DAY. Then I workout with weights 3 times a week and run 2-3 days a week. I could still lose the weight without the cardio, but my goals include running.

My next post will break down my diet. The kids want to play a game and I think that's a little more important right now. Later.
